Visiting both Akagera National Park and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is a great way to experience the country’s diverse natural beauty and wildlife. Here’s a suggested itinerary for a 3-day trip:

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Akagera National Park

Morning, Start your day early by driving from Kigali (the capital city) to Akagera National Park. The drive takes approximately 2-3 hours, so depart early to make the most of your day. Arrive at Akagera National Park and proceed to the park headquarters for registration and to hire a ranger or guide for your safari. Go on a game drive through Akagera National Park. This park is known for its diverse wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, and a variety of antelope species. It’s also a great place for birdwatching.

Day 2: Transfer from Akagera to Volcanoes National Park

Check out from your Akagera accommodation and drive back to Kigali. This drive will take a few hours. Arrive in Musanze, the town nearest to Volcanoes National Park. Have lunch in Musanze. Head to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters to register for your gorilla trekking experience. Ensure you have your gorilla permits booked well in advance. Check into your chosen accommodation in Musanze or the nearby area. Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for your gorilla trek the next day.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park and Back to Kigali

Early in the morning, head to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules and guidelines. In the late morning to afternoon embark on your gorilla trek. The duration and difficulty of the trek can vary, but it’s an incredible experience to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. After spending an hour with the gorillas, return to the park headquarters and receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Then transfer back to Kigali.
